Tooth Extraction Q & A

What is a tooth extraction?

A tooth extraction is a type of oral surgery that involves your Ghobadi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery provider carefully removing one or more of your teeth.

Before pulling any of your teeth, your dentist administers a local anesthetic, ensuring you feel no pain or discomfort throughout the procedure.

Why is an extraction necessary?

There are a number of reasons your dentist might recommend an extraction, including:

  • Damaged teeth
  • Decaying teeth
  • A crowded mouth
  • Infection

Your Ghobadi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery provider might also recommend an extraction if you’re at risk of developing an infection. For example, if you’re undergoing chemotherapy and have a compromised immune system, an extraction can prevent further complications.

Will I know it if I need an extraction?

The only way to determine if you need an extraction is to make an appointment with the team at Ghobadi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

Following an oral exam, review of your medical history, and discussion of your symptoms, your provider can make recommendations that align with your individual needs. If necessary, they might also order a series of X-rays to get a closer look at your jaw.

What is the process for getting an extraction?

At Ghobadi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, the team performs extractions on-site in their state-of-the-art offices. Prior to your procedure, your dentist administers a local anesthetic, numbing your tooth roots and gums. If you suffer from dental anxiety or need multiple extractions, your provider might also recommend sedation dentistry.

Once the anesthesia sets in, your dentist carefully extracts the damaged or infected tooth using a pair of dental forceps. If you have impacted teeth, the process is a little more complicated.

First, your dentist carefully cuts away your gum tissue to reveal the impacted tooth. Then, your dentist uses the forceps to gently rock the tooth back and forth.

If this doesn’t work, your dentist might cut your tooth into pieces and extract them one by one. Typically extractions take no longer than 60-90 minutes.

What is recovery like following an extraction?

Following your extraction, it’s perfectly normal to experience some pain, swelling, and general discomfort for a few days. Make sure to take your medications as prescribed and follow your Ghobadi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery provider’s instructions carefully.

Take at least one day off of work or school, and apply an ice pack to your cheek to ease inflammation. You’ll feel back to normal again within three to four days.

If one or more of your teeth are causing you problems, you might want to consider an extraction.
