Bone Graft Q & A

What is a bone graft?

During a bone graft procedure, your Ghobadi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery provider takes a bone from another part of your body, or uses a synthetic bone-like material, and grafts it to your jawbone.

After placing your graft, your dentist sends you home to recover for a period of between three and six months. During this recovery period, your graft creates healthy, new bone strong enough to support one or more dental implants.

What are the benefits of bone grafting?

Bone graft surgery provides a number of benefits, including:

Saves natural teeth

Left untreated, severe gum disease can cause your teeth to loosen and even fall out. Bone grafting can help prevent the loss of healthy surrounding teeth while lowering your risk of more complex or invasive oral surgeries later on.

Tooth extractions

If your Ghobadi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery provider recommends an extraction, you might also benefit from a bone graft. Following an extraction, bone grafting gives you the option to restore your tooth with an implant later on. In addition, a bone graft helps maintain the strength and health of your jawbone.

Dental implants

In order to qualify for dental implants, you must have a healthy jaw and gums. However, if you’re missing multiple teeth, your jawbone might begin receding. A bone graft can restore your jaw to its near original condition, allowing your Ghobadi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery provider to move forward with implants.

What happens during a bone graft?

The team at Ghobadi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery performs bone grafts on-site in their state-of-the-art facilities.

Prior to your bone graft, your dentist administers a local anesthetic to numb your tooth’s roots, gums, and surrounding soft tissues. After the anesthesia kicks in, your provider makes a small incision along your gum line that allows your provider to access the affected area.

After pinpointing the area of weakened bone, your provider inserts a collection of bone or synthetic bone material into the incision.

Your provider then stitches your incisions shut. In the weeks and months following your bone graft, your body regenerates new bone tissue, restoring the health of your jaw.
